Why They're At Risk
Near Threatened (IUCN Status)
The Harp Seal is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN — a status that reflects growing and accelerating concerns about the species' long-term security despite its current abundance of approximately 7–8 million individuals.
Climate change is the single most profound and overarching threat. The rapid loss of Arctic and sub-Arctic sea ice is occurring at a rate that is already affecting Harp Seal reproduction and survival in measurable and alarming ways. Harp Seals give birth on stable sea ice platforms in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the White Sea, and off Newfoundland. Pups are born completely helpless and unable to swim for the first several weeks of life, and require the sea ice to remain stable and intact during this critical nursing period.
In years when sea ice forms late, breaks up early, or fails to develop sufficient thickness and extent, pup mortality is catastrophic: pups are crushed by unstable ice, separated from mothers when ice breaks up prematurely, or drowned when unable to haul out on ice that has deteriorated. Since the late 1960s, sea ice extent in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (a critical Harp Seal pupping area) has declined dramatically, and years of near-total pup mortality due to ice failure have become increasingly frequent. It is this accelerating reproductive failure, driven directly by warming temperatures and sea ice loss, that is the primary driver of the species' Near Threatened listing and the principal reason that its current abundance cannot be taken as a guarantee of future security.
Climate-driven shifts in prey distribution — particularly the northward movement of capelin and Arctic cod populations tracking cooler water — are altering prey availability in traditional feeding grounds, with consequences for adult body condition and reproductive investment that compound the effects of pup mortality from ice loss.
Commercial hunting: while dramatically reduced from the industrial-scale harvests of the mid-20th century & early 2000s that eliminated hundreds of thousands of seals annually — continues in Canada, Norway, Russia, and Greenland, and the cumulative effects of harvest mortality on a population already experiencing climate-driven reproductive stress can lead to population crashes in the near future.

Entanglement in fishing gear, particularly in the heavily fished waters of the Northwest Atlantic, kills a significant number of harp seals annually, adding mortality that is difficult to monitor comprehensively but contributes meaningfully to the overall population pressure.
Contaminant accumulation, particularly of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals concentrated in the blubber and tissues of a long-lived marine predator, impairs immune function and reproductive success in ways that interact with other stressors to reduce overall population resilience.
The trajectory of the Arctic environment on which the harp seal depends points clearly toward a future in which the conditions for successful reproduction become progressively less reliable — making proactive conservation action and urgent climate mitigation the most important factors in determining whether this species' Near Threatened status represents a temporary alarm or the beginning of a more serious decline...
